Actress Paula Patton, who is CoverGirl Queen Collection's new Brand Ambassador, looked stunning on the red carpet at the 43rd Annual NAACP Awards. Makeup artist Fiona Stiles provides details on how to get the look.
Since Paula was wearing an elegant red, strapless beaded dress, Fiona decided to go for a sultry look that played up Paula’s eyes, while keeping the skin natural and skin radiant. Paula also had a few ideas for how she wanted to look, providing a few editorial tear sheets which Fiona says she used as a springboard.
Fiona started by moisturizing and prepping the lips with lip balm. While the lips absorbed the hydrating ingredients, she began work on the other areas of the face.
Read these tips to prepare your lips for color.
On Paula’s face:
Fiona used a beautyblender, (a special makeup sponge used to blend makeup to a flawless finish) and a synthetic foundation brush to apply the foundation. She used CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Pressed Powder in Light Bronze and CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Concealer in Light was used where needed.

Fiona swept just a touch of CoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Lush Berry on the apples of the cheeks using a dual fiber brush. She then set both of the products with a loose translucent powder (CoverGirl Professional Loose Powder).
She followed this with CoverGirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Bronzer in Light Bronze for a little warmth on the cheeks, and a slightly deeper bronze shade of the Natural Hue Bronzer in Brown Bronze applied sparingly to contour.
On Paula’s eyes:
CoverGirl Queen Collection Vivid Impact Eye Liner in Midnight
CoverGirl Queen Collection 1-Kit Eyeshadow in Black Tie
CoverGirl Queen Collection Lash Fanatic Mascara in Black
CoverGirl SmokyShadowBlast in Bronze Fire
For the eyes, Fiona filled in the brows and brushed them into place. She used a clear mascara to set them, so they'd stay put throughout the night.
Using CoverGirl SmokyShadowBlast in Bronze Fire, she applied a wash of deep bronze on the lid and blended it up towards the brow, then applied a bit of the bronze under the eye.
The upper lash was lined with CoverGirl Queen Collection Vivid Impact Eye Liner in Midnight. She then blended out the color, softening the line. Using CoverGirl Queen Collection 1-Kit Eyeshadow in Black Tie, Fiona went over the liner to deepen the color and to add depth, and blended it up the eye, concentrating on the outer corners to elongate the eye.
For a dramatic lash, she stroked three coats of CoverGirl Queen Collection Lash Fanatic mascara in Black on the top and two on the bottom lashes to give the eyes a doe-eyed look.
She finished up the eye look using the champagne color from the SmokyShadowBlast palette as a highlighter on the inside of the eyes.
On Paula’s lips:
CoverGirl Queen Collection Lip Color in Penelope Pink
CoverGirl Lip Gloss in Pearled Peach
For the finishing touch, Fiona used a lip brush to apply CoverGirl Queen Collection Lip Color in Penelope Pink, and then added a bit of gloss (CoverGirl Queen Collection Lip Gloss in Pearled Peach) on top.
A final note: “I always give my client blotting papers and her lip color to take with her for stealthy touch ups during the night,” says Fiona. “The nights can be long, and there are always cameras around!”
