It can take months before you see results for pigmentation problems, even with the most effective treatments. Until then you’ll want a great product to hide skin imperfections.
The best products have:
- easy-to-blend formulas that camouflage hyperpigmentation and skin discolorations
- smooth, full coverage that dries to a natural-looking finish
- non-irritating ingredients (fragrance-free, non-acnegenic, etc.)
And like hp treatments, one type doesn’t match all. What works for one person may not work for another, but here are eight great options to consider:
MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer
A favorite among acne sufferers, this lightweight concealer is water-resistant, fragrance-free and also protects against UV damage—often the cause of hp and age spots. You’ll also want sunscreen to protect skin that becomes more sensitive to the sun while using hp treatments. It has a concentrated formula so you just need a small amount for coverage. Set with powder for staying power.
Jafra Dark Imperfection Corrector
Jafra Color created products to address the needs of darker complexions, including a great color corrector. This $20 three-color palette moisturizing concealer includes: medium—for fair to medium shades (great for golden/olive skin tones), deep—darker pigmented skin tones, and a neutralizer to cancel out blue and correct discolorations.
Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer
Named Best Concealer by Allure Magazine two years in a row, this concealer has a two-shade system, one to match skin depth and one to match undertone, and is available in 5 color palettes. Apply concealer after foundation (with the line’s Silk Crème Foundation or your personal favorite). First warm it up on the back of your hand to give it a creamy texture and then custom blend to achieve a desired match. This concealer is great for oily skin. As a final touch, use translucent powder for all-day wear.
Make Up For Ever Full Coverage Concealer
This Sephora exclusive is a favorite among consumers with discoloration problems. It offers long-lasting, full coverage that dries to a matte finish. Other pluses: it’s oil free, waterproof and covers major imperfections from sun spots to patches, yet has a light, creamy formula and a high concentration of pigment. A little goes a long way. Can be used on face and body. It’s best for normal to dry skin types. Also fine for sensitive skin. Very oily types will find that it wears off a bit faster than for other skin types.
Dermablend Cover Crème
Now with a new, creamier formulation, Cover Crème provides natural-looking coverage while covering severe hyperpigmentation. Though it acts as both foundation and concealer, one makeup artist suggests building up coverage using a concealer brush with a tapered tip, blend, and then finish with foundation. There are 21 shades to choose from.
Black Opal Total Coverage Foundation 2-in-1
Provides smooth coverage, camouflages and evens out skin tone in one step and protects against environmental stressors.
Iman Luxury Radiance Liquid Makeup
From one of my favorite makeup lines, this mineral enriched formula conceals while promoting a healthy complexion. It’s lightweight, blends well, and dries to a matte finish. It has the texture of a mousse, so those who are heavy-handed like me should probably use a brush for application to avoid putting on too much.
